Utilization of Carrot Pomace to Grow Mealworm Larvae (Tenebrio molitor)

Edible insects are a sustainable food source to help feed the growing population. Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) can survive on variety of wastes and alter their composition based source. Commercial carrot production produces an abundance carotenoid-rich pomace, which may be beneficial for mealworm larvae growth. This study uses I-optimal response surface design assess effect dehydrated pomace concentrations (made up with wheat bran as control) in substrate wet moisture (potato control sources) mealworm-larvae-growing system. Using this design, statistical models were fit determine relationship between dependent variables, include mortality, days maturity, weight, protein content, fat ash total carotenoid content.
